HAUS 1 at Atelier Gardens has won a Best Architects 25 Award in the category Renovations & Additions!

The bright yellow, beating heart of our impact and film campus in Berlin has been recognised by the judges, alongside 82 projects across Europe for their outstanding achievements and innovative architectural designs.

HAUS 1 is the transformation of a tired ’90s office building into an eye-catching new entrance and central hub for Atelier Gardens by MVRDV and Hirschmuller Schindele Architects.  The building is completed with a new living roof, a sustainable timber rooftop pavilion, and a terrace, accessible via a grand external, zig-zagging staircase.

The most immediately obvious sign of this change is the building’s colour. Once plain and grey, the building is now a sunshine yellow, drawing attention to the campus from both near and far. The new striking, sculptural stairscape, dotted with seating and viewing platforms, frames views of Tempelhof Airfield and the Berlin skyline.

With its focus on reusing the existing structure, and giving preference to reused, durable and recyclable materials with a low environmental footprint, HAUS 1 shows how building can be transformed to do more with less!

“The era of large forms seems to be over for good. A colorful mixture of styles and concepts shows that each project was developed from the specific task and is often deeply interwoven with the location and its users.”
