Atelier Gardens has won the Best Commercial Design Award at the Pro Landscaper Sustainability and Diversity Awards!
We are incredibly proud of our one-of-a-kind campus, dedicated to impact organisations, film and media in Berlin. And the site’s radical regreening and soil restoration programme has played a huge part in its success.
Huge thanks to the judges for recognising the trailblazing work of world-leading landscape designers Harris Bugg Studio.
Working hand-in-glove, nature has been reintroduced on a mammoth scale – transforming the six acre, entirely-concreted site, from just six trees to 180, along with over 25,000 plants. Creating a series of beautiful green spaces for the campus’ new creative community of both people and wildlife.
Plants have been specified throughout for their pioneer qualities, inspired by the campus’ trailblazing community of changemakers. Plants with the ability to thrive in all conditions and importantly for their soil-restoration qualities. Critically, allowing us to work with what we have and regenerate the soil over time, rather than moving the problem on.
And living and breathing our circular approach, all the hard materials taken up have been crushed on site and repurposed as a mulch – helping to suppress weeds for reduced maintenance, improve water retention and create micro-habitats for invertebrates, as well as diverting over hundreds of tonnes from landfill.
It’s been fantastic to make Harris Bugg’s vision of a garden of pioneers, for pioneers, become an award-winning reality!
“The gardens have activated the site beyond our wildest imaginings – from a grey and unused series of spaces, there are now festivals, gigs, film screenings, food markets, community events, bee hives, composting workshops, rescued chickens and even a ‘pigeon theatre!”
