The sensitive restoration of one of Southwark’s last surviving Victorian warehouses – 55 Great Suffolk Street – has been named Retrofit winner at New London Architecture’s New London Awards 2022.

Our plans for the derelict Grade II-listed warehouse will see the much-loved Bankside building – vacant for 50 years and on Historic England’s Heritage at Risk Register – brought back into use as characterful, creative workspace.

Designs by Hawkins\Brown and our own in-house design team Studio Fabrix combine meticulous restoration of original features with a new, distinctly-contemporary, external core structure.

The addition allows for the building’s open floorplates to remain uninterrupted, with the carbon impact minimised through the use of reclaimed steel salvaged from another building – one of the first projects in the UK to do so.

This is a very special building which holds a very special place in a lot of people’s hearts – not least ours. We can’t wait to bring it back to life with our fantastic consultant team.

The New London Awards recognise the best new projects, at all scales, both built and unbuilt, that contribute to the creation of a more sustainable, civilised, and egalitarian London.
